GEN Valentine's

Set the Scene for Your Own Love Story

Yoann Rousset

As Winter slowly releases its grips, the season of love approaches to warm the cockles of our cold hearts. Here at SANDEMANs we do not claim to know the secrets of love, but we do know a thing or two about the beautiful spots in our cities that we have fallen head over heels for. So if you are travelling this Valentine’s Day with someone you love, here are a few spots that will definitely serve as a nice backdrop (or selfie background…) for your own love story.

EL BORN DISTRICT. Barcelona is known for being one of the most beautiful cities in the world. With its gothic architecture, narrow streets and gorgeous beaches, the city is basically a picture perfect postcard. However, if you are looking to steal a moment away from the crowds with your special someone, check out the El Born District. Instead of stressing over finding the perfect Valentine’s gift, visit any one of the boutique shops where you can find unique treasures. The rows of cafes will leave you spoiled for choice when it comes to dining options, and if you are in the mood to try the best pizza in Barcelona, head to the picturesque Passeig del Born square (it’ll only cost you €1,50 a slice).

HRADČANY. If you are after the ultimate Valentine’s Day experience, then hop on over to Prague because we’ve got you sorted. Running from 11th to 14th February, the Romantic Tour of Prague will take you through the winding and hidden streets of Lesser town, where you will pass by the former palaces of the nobility and hear the tales of royal love between Czech Kings and Queens. We then journey beyond the castle gates and through the picturesque Hradčany district to discover the ensemble of contrasting architectural styles that make Prague so unique. End your day with a 3-hour boat cruise and dinner along the Vltava river. Enjoy the panorama of Prague from different perspective and see the romance of Prague truly come alive!

KONZERTHAUS ON GENDARMENMARKT. Berlin is a cornucopia of interesting things; the city is cool, edgy and yet it is so full of history. Berlin, however, is also still quite cold in February, so we strongly suggest you plan an indoor activity with your partner in crime. Why not have some music to accompany your love story? Flanked by a French and German church, the Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt makes for a beautiful backdrop both inside and out. The Konzerthaus boasts a programme that ranges from symphony concerts to chamber music, from musical theater productions to special children’s concerts, from old to modern music. Let some good tunes put you in the mood for love.

GRAND PLACE. Grote Markt or Grand Place is the central square of Brussels. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been voted the most beautiful square in Europe. You really don’t need much more convincing when it comes to trying to find your picture opportunity in Brussels. It is also worth knowing that Grand Place houses the Brewery Museum. Here you will find brewing instruments that date back to the eighteenth century and learn how Belgians have evolved their techniques overtime. We also strongly recommend enjoying a glass of beer, the Belgians have been doing this a long time, so enjoy their labour of love.

Sandemans Romantic 6

PUB CRAWL. This is technically not a specific place, and is for those who love big and bold. Call us old fashion, but we still like to meet new people face to face. So we’ve organised a special Valentine’s Pub Crawl to connect those who love to party! With drink specials and free entry to clubs and pubs, it’s bound to be a great night that will definitely make your heart pound!

Sandemans Romantic 7

EDINBURGH CASTLE. What better place to start the plot of a love story than at a Castle in the sky. Sitting on top of Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle dominates the skyline and provides a stunning view of the city when you look down from it. Inside you will find treasures from Royals and experience the drama of battles for freedom.

Sandemans Romantic 8

SANTA LUZIA VIEWPOINT. It’s hard not to fall in love with Lisbon; the trams, the buildings, the friendly Portuguese people and the delicious food! Pack a picnic (or get take away from a cafe) and head up to Santa Luzia viewpoint for a meal with a view. This viewpoint overlooks the Tagus river and Alfama’s colourful houses and makes for a picture perfect moment. The famous tram 28 is round the corner, so hop on it and enjoy an evening with your loved one.

Sandemans Romantic 9

SEINE RIVER. No Valentine’s list is complete without mentioning Paris. Yes, it is cliche, and even slightly cheesey (brie my Valentine?) but take an evening walk along the Seine River and we dare you not to fall in love with the city lights. Stroll along the bridges that numerous lovers before you have crossed, and take in everything the city of love has to offer. For our Spanish speaking friends, join us on the City of Love tour this weekend and let Paris romance the pants off you.

All places listed above are sites that we visit on tours across our network. Check out our website to hop onto any of these tours during your romantic getaway! We hope you get as googly-eyed about our cities as we are!
